Choose an AI task small enough to check
Start with a repeatable task, a clear example and a human review you can actually carry out.
A useful first AI experiment has a narrow job and an obvious way to check the result. “Use AI across the business” does not give you either. “Turn an approved meeting note into a draft action list” is a more manageable starting point.
Choose a task you understand
Look for work that is repeated, has a clear input and produces something a person can review. Drafting a structure, reformatting approved information or suggesting questions for a meeting may be easier to evaluate than a task where you cannot recognise a mistake.
Keep consequential decisions and final external messages under the control of the person responsible for them. A polished draft is not evidence that its facts are correct.
Use a safe example
Start with fictional or appropriately approved material. Do not paste confidential customer information into a tool just to see what happens. Check your organisation’s rules, the tool’s settings and the provider’s current data terms before using real business information.
Changing an individual’s tool settings is not the same as approving the tool for the whole business.
Write down the expected output
Give the task a short brief: purpose, input, required format, constraints and what to do when something is missing. Include an example of a good result if you have one. Ask for uncertainty to remain visible rather than filled with a plausible guess.
Test more than the easy case
Try a typical input, an incomplete input and one with conflicting information. Check for invented facts, missing actions and a result that is technically correct but unusable by the team.
Record how much review and correction the output needs. If checking takes longer than doing the task, simplify the experiment or choose another task.
Decide who owns it
Agree who reviews the result, where it is stored and when the process should stop or escalate. Document the current approach so another person can repeat it. You can use the decision worksheet to capture the experiment.
